Nepal Astronomical Society (NASO) is pleased to announce the result of 5th National Call for Astronomy Olympiad Teacher Training 2017. The selected teachers will get an opportunity to attend Astronomy Olympiad Exposure Camp 2017 which will be held at Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE),Mumbai,India during October 31-November 3, 2017.

After careful review of all the applications received, following applicants were selected based on their motivations, CVs and recommendations/nominations letter from their respective institutions.

5th National Call for Astronomy Olympiad Teacher Training 2017!

Nepal Astronomical Society (NASO) is pleased to announce 5th National Call for "Astronomy Olympiad Teacher Training 2017" to select teachers who will help the organizing National Astronomy Olympiad Organizing Committee- Nepal to organize 5th National Astronomy Olympiad 2018- Nepal.

Among all the applicants, five best applicants will be selected based on their motivation, academic history and interviews (both telephone and in person). 

Application without nomination letter from the college is not valid

They will participate in the upcoming Astronomy Olympiad Exposure Camp 2017 which will be held at Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE),Mumbai,India during October 31-November 3, 2017.

What is the objective of this Training?

The primary objective of this training is to select the five best applicants who will assist NASO to organize its astronomy olympiad in 2018. It also aims at productive interaction of our selected candidates at regional level (SAARC) with Olympiad activity at its focus.

What will be there at the training at HBCSE,Mumbai, India?

It will consist of various exposure sessions on theory, data analysis problems as well as night sky observation sessions. Tentative topics include celestial mechanics, observational astronomy, positional astronomy and observable properties of stars.

Who can apply? 

Anyone who has completed their masters degree in physics (preferrably with major astrophysics) and currently working as a physics faculty at one of the high school in Nepal can apply.

What will be the cost of participation?

Selected candidates will be reimbursed to and fro travel fare as per the entitlement (Maximum II AC). Food and accommodation in the HBCSE Guest House will be provided. During the workshop, one may visit HBCSE laboratories, library, History of Science Exhibition, HBCSE “books for sale” section, etc.

When will be the selection result available?

The result will be announced at our website on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 and provided with further instruction on the participation in India.

Nepal Awarded Honorable Mention at 10th IOAA!

Team Nepal at 10th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA2016) awarded 'Honorable Mention' to Bijay Chandra Luitel. He was an absolute winner of 3rd National Astronomy Olympiad 2016 (NAO2016) was held during June 11 till August 31, 2016 in Nepal. 

IOAA2016 was held in Bhuwaneshwor, Odisha, India during December 9-19, 2016 where 234 students from 42 counrties participated for different awards. Team Nepal was formed with the top five scorers among 188 applicants from Biratnagar, Chitwan, Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara participated during our NAO2016. They were Bijaya Chandra Luitel and Divas Subedi from Chelsea International Academy, Nawaj KC from Trinity International College, Rabin Thapa from St. Xavier's College and Tarun Timalsina from Gandaki Higher Secondary Boarding School. Team Nepal was led by Suresh Bhattarai and Manisha Dwa as Team Leaders.

The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) is an annual astronomy competition for high school students. It is one of the international science Olympiads. It has three rounds namely Theoretical Round, Data Analysis Round and Observational Round. It also has team competition round to strengthen team work within or among the teams of different countries.

Winners of 3rd NAO2016 participates at 10th IOAA in India!

The five winners of our 3rd National Astronomy Olympiad 2016 (NAO2016) will be participating in the 10th International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) which will be held in Bhuwaneshwor, Odisha, India during December 9-19, 2016. There will be 238 students guided by 123 team leaders from 43 countries during the IOAA.

Top five students were selected through several screening stages during the Olympiad from 188 applicants from Biratnagar, Chitwan, Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara. NAO2016 was held during June 11 till August 31, 2016.

The wait is finally over!

We are pleased to announce the winners of our 3rd National Astronomy Olympiad 2016 that was held during June 7-August 31, 2016 in Nepal.

The top five students for NAO2016 are:

Selected students will be awarded with certificate and medals during a ceremony to be organized in Kathmandu.

This year, we will form two teams from 19 successful students ( see the list above) to participate in 12th Asian-Pacific Astronomy Olympiad to be held in Korea during November 17-25, 2016 and 10th International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) to be held in India during December 9-19, 2016 respectively.

The selected two team members will undergo another training before their participation in the upcoming competitions: APAO (Regional) and IOAA (International).

Nepal succefully participates on Third Astronomy Olympiad Exposure Camp, October 28-31, 2013, India!

A seven member team lead by Nepal Astronomical Society (NASO) is back to Kathmandu with great enthusiam and strong commitment to host the First National Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2014 in Nepal. The team successfully participated in the Astronomy Olympiad Exposure Camp during Nov 28-31, 2013 at Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education ( HBCSE), Mumbai, India.

The team also paricipated on the ProAm3 Meeting prior to the Exposure Camp at HBSCE on Nov 27, 2013 where amateur and professionals discussed on how citizen science projects can be promoted and how people can get involved on these projects.

While in Mumbai, our team visited Nehru Science Center and Nehru Planetarium to get a first hand experience on what should be integrated to our science center in Nepal which we we dreaming in Nepal for a long time!
