Gravity Spy: How you can contribute to LIGO’s discoveries, from the other side of the globe?

LIGO is designed to detect gravitational waves which produces a length change of 10E-18 metres in its 4 km long arm. This also makes it sensitive to a great deal of instrumental and environmental sources of noise. Among these the one that are of most concern are transient, poorly modeled artifacts known by the LIGO community as glitches. Gravity Spy is a program designed to involve citizen scientists in identifying those glitches, which are not ofastrophysical origin. These identified glitches makes a dataset that is used to train a machine learning algorithm to enhance its ability to separate the noise from the gravitational wave signals.

This program was initially launched as a beta version on June of 2016. The full implementation of the program was launched on October of 2016. It has close to 12,000 registered users and has achieved about 3,000,000 different classifications by now. You can signup at the following link and help LIGO find glitches that are already known or even find a new kind of glitch.

You can also get new updates about the gravity spy by following the blog linked below:

Enjoy and happy glitch hunting!

Get Ready for the 5th National Astronomy Olympiad on February 17, 2018!

Following the great success of our previous versions of the olympiad in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017; the application for the 5th National Astronomy Olympiad was opened on December 10, 2017! This year, we will have exam centers at Biratagar, Chitwan, Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal and Dhangadi. We are adding one major cities each year so that students have better access to this program in Nepal.

***NAO2018 Application Form and Handbook from our website: www.nepalastronomicalsociety.org/olympiad ***

How to apply at NAO2018?
  • Download Application Form and Handbook from www.nepalastronomicalsociety.org/olympiad
  • Go through the handbook to know details of the program, model questions, syllabus, schedule, etc and most importantly contact details of our focal point in your region.
  • Prepare your application (DO NOT LEAVE THE MOTIVATION SECTION EMPTY) carefully.

Currently Nepal has three National Science Olympiads: Physics, Astronomy & Mathematics that go to International Olympiads. You can get registration details about Physics and Mathematics Olympiads on their respective websites.

National Astronomy Olympiad started in 2014 and growing slowly providing a better opportunity to the participants to learn from each others during its closed camp sessions.

In December, orientation programs on astronomy olympiad program were held in Chitwan and Pokhara providing interested students to know more about the program in person.
